Lagunas de Mejia National Sanctuary is located on the southwest of Arequipa 150km away and two hours driving on paved road, until the coastal town of Mollendo nearby of the sanctuary. The lagoon are located next of the Pacific Ocean, this place is protected area and refuge for migratory birds from all over the world.

The Mejia National Sanctuary was established on February 24th, 1984 as a “national santuary of birds”, and is in the department of Arequipa, province of Islay with an area of 690.6 hectares surrounded by Tambo River. The main reason why the birds landed here is because the terrain provides lot food from the river, lagoon and the Pacific Ocean.

A unique refuge in the coastal region of the country for migratory birds from other continents on its north-south route; as well as a habitat for the endemic species in danger of extinction, and shelter of important units of wild flora own of aquatic ecosystems of the litoral. “The lagoons of Mejía refuge diverse ecosystems like marshes, saline swamps, lagoons, sprawling totora clumps, riverbank bush, grassland, and sandy beaches for which it is considered one of the most important in South Americathat makes atractive for a  large flocks of birds and appreciated by birdwatchers.

We came to pick you up at your hotel 4.30 am, then we  drive by  panamericana highway after 2:30 hours we will arrive to the National Sanctuary Lagunas de Mejia wich is located in the Pacific Coast about 3.40 msnm. this area  manages to cover different types of habitats. The area of the sanctuary its a flat land mixed with some land falls close to the sea, where we can observe about 195 different bird species of wich 75 species are from the area , exist 6 species that are resident in the sea and front of the Sanctuary , 80 species of migratory birds, 48 come from North – America and the Artic , 18 from the South of Southamerica , 3 of the coast north of Peru, and 10 of the andes and jungle of Peru. Finally its a group of about 30 species considered as bird with occasional presence an 4 species in danger of extintion.

Once we get there, we start to see as many as possible birds of this place.

After lunch and finish our birding tour. We will return to Arequipa by the road of Cocachacra wich is a very beautiful countryside full of agriculturals areas.
