The Route of Canasteros

The department of Cusco features a major diversity of bird species, as a local and migrant birds that are appreciated by ornithologists and amateurs from all over the world.
Tambomachay valley is located at the northern section of Cusco city, it’s one of the best hot spots for sighting some specific species of bird in Cusco, more specifically in Saqsayhuaman National Park. This birding program takes you walking across the polylepis wood land and grassland (Andean straw), and some Inca remains.

This program combines grassland and polylepis wood land, agriculture areas, archeological sites non-frequently visited.

ITINERARY

We come at your hotel to pick up you at 5:30 a.m to drive in direction to Huayllarccocha lagoon to begin our activities. In this place we will observe some lagoon birds. From here we walk in direction of Wayllarccocha Community, here we begin our walking up hill side, in order to see birds in its natural habitat and around to the field houses, like Thrushes, Seed eaters, Tanagers, Hummminbirds, Tinamous, Wrens, Finchs, Chat-tyrants and others.

We continue walking up to reach the grassland and polylepis wood land, here it well be the best moment to observe some endemic birds like:

  • Creamy crested Spinetail
  • Rusty fronted Canastero
  • Junín Canastero
  • Crestnut-breasted Mountain-finch

Also we can find other birds as:

  • Streak fronted Thornbird
  • Streak-throated Canastero
  • Streak-backed Canastero
  • Buffed-breasted Earthcreeper
  • Andean Tinamou

Finches, seed eaters and Tit tyrants would be seen too. Then to leave this valley we walk up to reach some grassland, have a great view of Cusco city and its surrounds, this is a good place to observe Raptors, Cinclodes, Miners, Earth creepers, Gulls. We finish the walking tour at Wayllarcocha community, ending our tour program and coming back to Cusco, leaving you at your hotel.
