Profile of the Tour

This trip is designed for partners and friends who are the mix of birders and non-birders. This circuit has been planned to appreciate three important archaeological sites, finishing with the impressive religious sanctuary of Machu Picchu. In the course of this awesome alternative route we will have the opportunity to see the high andean plateau and mountain valley birds, with a fresh look of all the beauty and variety of the natural and cultural richness, in addition to the unique geographical formations that give life to landscapes dominated with the canyons, to finally arrive at the most imposing landmark, wrought by the hand of man: Machupicchu.

As you can see, this is a product designed for those who do not have the possibility of extended stay times, but can enjoy the experience of seeing various species of highland birds, along with all the attractions that this route presents, that still retains its natural and cultural charm, as it is still not very crowded.

Day 1: Cusco - Tambomachay - Pukamarca
We pick up at your hotel and drive to Huayllarcocha community, here we visit a small lagoon to early birding. We set up our birding and photography equipment to start our activities. After that, we will begin the ascent in direction of Tambomachay pass (4,250 m.a.s.l), since this point until the first pass of Tambomachay, we will be able to appreciate as a possible variety of birds, like Canasteros, Finch, Seedeaters and High Andean Birds in all its magnitude. After a short break will continue heading north to get to the lagoon Queullacocha and Qoricocha, it was considered a Pakarina (Place of origin of life) in Andean culture. In the lakes you can observe different kind of birds like Andean Gooses, Ducks, Gulls. Grebes, Ibis, Falcons and others; also, we will appreciate the lamas and alpacas that inhabit the area all year.
The road continues across the Qoricocha pass, where we find the apachetas (offerings to local mountains as mounds of stones left by ancient pilgrims). From this point we will begin to descend to Pukamarka community where we can appreciate the whole environment of the rural population with their ancestral way of living that still conserves. Here we set up our camp or we can spend the night in a local homestay, conditioned for local families to receive travelers.

Day 2: Pukamarca - Huchuy Qosqo – Sacred Valley Hotel
Restarting our birding activities early in the morning, we walk around of this picturesque village to looking for some local mountain birds and visit the archaeological site of Pukamarka, from where we start to descend the spectacular canyon formed by volcanic rocks deep red eroded for over millions of years and polished by the skilled hands of our ancestors. After to cross this amazing canyon we spend a couple hours searching for some specific highlights birds, like:
  • Rusty-fronted Canastero (endemic)
  • White-tufted Sunbeam (endemic)
  • Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch (endemic)
  • Bearded Mountaineer hummingbird (endemic)
Also we will observe some Tit-like Dacnis, Tanagers, Finches, Flowerpiercers, Flycatchers, Grosbeaks, Hummingbirds, Tinamous and others.
Continuing our journey along the original Inca Trail we rich to the Archaeological Complex of Huchuy Qosqo, we have a guided tour, where we will be spellbound for the beauty of the geographical environment and a unique view of the Sacred Valley. After our guided tour, we go to visit the Huchuy Qosqo community to enjoy a countryside breakfast with 100% organic products of the area, especially prepared by a local family.
Finishing our breakfast, we leave Huchuy Qosqo, on a descend to reach Lamay village, located in the Sacred Valley; while we walk downhill, you will see many birds like Raptors, Grasland finchs, Hummingbirds, Swallows, Wrens, Thrushes, Gulls, Doves, Pigeons and others, Once we reach Lamay, we have a typical lunch in a local restaurant managed by the community.
After our lunch, we drive along the Sacred Valley to accommodate in a hotel.

Day 3: Sacred Valley - Machupicchu - Cusco
After an early wake up and breakfast, we are going to pick up the train to take us to Machupicchu.
Once we arrive to Aguas Calientes town, we take the bus ride up to Machu Picchu, where we will tour the amazing architecture and mysterious temples left by the andean masters and specialized stone masons. A professional bilingual guide will help us to understand the sophisticated technology of this highly-advanced culture. Finalized the guided tour we return to Aguas Calientes to get the train to Cusco in the afternoon.
